Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

All companies that use packaging are legally required to register for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and join a producer responsibility organization. Since 2024, wooden pallets are classified as packaging and are therefore subject to an environmental fee. These fees are significantly lower for producers connected to Trackmate — a market-driven system for reuse. Here, you can learn how Trackmate enables circular systems and helps reduce costs.

Reduced environmental fee from SEK 2.50 per kilo to SEK 0.05 per kilo when connected to the Trackmate system.

Setting up load carrier return flows
Trackmate enables circular flows for wooden pallets. If a return rate of at least 25% is achieved (from 2025 onwards), the environmental fee is reduced.

About extended producer responsibility (EPR)

What’s New?

As of January 1, 2024, the fees for certain packaging under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme have increased significantly — particularly for wooden packaging. What used to be just a few öre per kilo is now SEK 2.50 per kilo for B2B distribution, and SEK 10 per kilo for private use distribution.

What Does Extended Producer Responsibility Mean?

Any company placing packaging on the Swedish market is legally required to take financial responsibility for ensuring that the packaging is collected and recycled. Companies must report the volumes and number of packaging units introduced into the Swedish market and pay environmental and supervisory fees.

You are considered a producer if your company does any of the following:

  • Fills or otherwise uses packaging (to protect, present, or facilitate the handling and transport of a product)

  • Imports a packaged product into Sweden

  • Sells a packaged product or packaging from another country directly to an end user in Sweden
